Time to play, create restrictions to foster creativity solutions.

This latest timelapse project was created as an experiment in creative constraint-based filmmaking, using only what I had available at the time — an iPhone 12 and a carbon fibre monopod. Filmed over a short 5-minute window in timelapse mode, the camera was locked off to allow the scene to unfold naturally without intervention. The goal was not technical perfection, but to explore how simplicity and limitation can shape more intentional visual storytelling.

Shot on Te Rapa Road in Hamilton, New Zealand, the scene focuses on a lone tree positioned in the centre of the frame, surrounded by the continuous blur of passing traffic. This contrast between stillness and motion became the core visual idea of the piece, aiming for a cinematic yet calm atmosphere. The intent was both observational and interpretive — capturing a real environment while also presenting it in a more considered, artistic way that encourages viewers to see a familiar location differently.

This project is part of an ongoing series exploring Hamilton and wider New Zealand locations through creative filmmaking constraints. Working within limitations has helped refine focus toward composition, timing, and storytelling rather than equipment complexity. As I continue developing this series, the aim is to inspire others to see everyday environments differently and to demonstrate what can be achieved with minimal gear and a clear creative intent.
